Chapter Fifteen

Hannah

It was dark out, dinner was simmering, and they still hadn’t stopped arguing. From the moment Flynn made her offer, Hannah knew it would go down this way. She knew Cole would refuse and she knew the team would rally against him. They wanted answers. Everyone here wanted answers, in one form or another.

And at the moment they weren’t getting any. Lena wouldn’t talk without Flynn’s consent. Flynn wouldn’t talk unless she was alone with Hannah. Hannah wouldn’t talk without Cole’s consent. Cole wouldn’t give it.

And so the war raged. It was hard to listen to. It was hard to let Cole go on this way, but she did. The truth was, she needed this extra time in order to strategize. Because Hannah’s recent memory of her brother had changed things for her. That last conversation they’d had before Uriah left the Wall, it sparked something for her. Something bigger than she yet understood.

So in the end, no matter what Cole agreed to or didn’t, the cold fact remained… Hannah needed to talk to Flynn… and it had to be alone. But publicly she couldn’t go against Cole, so they were officially stuck.

Sitting at the long wooden table, Hannah kept her hands folded demurely in her lap. Everyone had been called in for this display, everyone. It was an emergency team meeting of sorts, no one was even on watch.

Liam and Lena had come down from cutting wood, looking all dusty and sweaty despite the cold weather. It was the dark-haired woman who sat across from Hannah now, but she faced away from her, watching Liam, like always.

Trey leaned against the far wall, eyes tracking the situation while Cookie bent over the fireplace and heated up day old stew.

“But what’s the harm in letting them talk?” Ace persisted. His dark skin was flushed and his cheeks heated with resolve.

“Alone?” Cole was incredulous. “Do I really need to spell it out? It’s not safe. We still don’t get any answers. It puts Hannah in danger.”

“From what I’ve heard, Hannah can handle herself,” Ace countered. “So we watch through a window.”

“No.” Cole shook his head for the millionth time. “I’m in the same room, or nothing at all.”

Chan shifted in his seat. He was right beside Hannah, his expression impassive though his eyes were intent. He watched the exchange with interest before letting his eyes drift for a moment to linger on Lena’s back.

The other woman stirred but did not turn around. If she could feel his eyes on her, she gave no indication.

“What do you think, Chan?” Hannah whispered, causing him to jump slightly. It was like he had forgotten she sat there beside him.

“I want to know what’s behind the Wall.” Chan let his brown eyes cross to hers. “Don’t you?”

The question was an interesting one and it flooded Hannah’s brain for several moments. Yes, of course she wanted the full story… because despite her flashbacks, she still didn’t have it.

But Hannah knew just enough now to make her extra cautious.
